Ya Çok Seversen: 5 reasons behind the international success of the Turkish series

Starring Kerem Bürsin and Hafsanur Sancaktutan, the show has been sold to 20 countries

[Contains spoilers]

In July of this year, the Turkish series Ya Çok Seversen premiered on television. Written by Kübra Sülün (Afili Aşk), the plot tells the story of Ates (Kerem Bürsin) and Leyla (Hafsanur Sancaktutan). While Ateş has spent his life abroad on his own, Leyla is a young woman who is part of a gang that arranges fake marriages to deceive wealthy men.

Even in its first season, the series has sold to 20 countries. The production’s success can be attributed to many factors such as the dynamics of the main couple and the character development. Furthermore, Ya Çok Seversen has captured the audience’s attention since its debut due to its talented and charismatic cast, including names like Kerem Bürsin, Hafsanur Sancaktutan, Aziz Caner İnan and Hatice Aslan.

The fact is that the international audience has well received the Turkish series Ya Çok Seversen. With that in mind, we’ve selected 5 reasons that explain why the production has achieved success in other countries.

Engaging plot

In the plot, Ateş was sent to a boarding school when he was a child after the death of his mother. However, he is compelled to return to Istanbul when his father, Vahit Arcalı, passes away. In the will, Vahit stipulates that Ateş will be the legal guardian of Ilgaz (Lara Aslan), Aydos (Adin Külçe), and Berit (Arven Ece Yavuz), the three children he had with his second wife. Furthermore, the company is left under the responsibility of Ateş.

On the other hand, Leyla lives a completely different life. The Character is a cheater who is part of a gang that orchestrates fake marriages while nurturing the desire to find her own family. Along with Yakup (Nazmi Kırık), Barış (Durukan Çelikkaya), Meryem (Mine Kılıç) e Onur (Oğulcan Arman Uslu), they plan fake weddings with wealthy men and run away with their money shortly after the celebration.

Initially, Leyla and Ateş’ distinct universes coincidentally collide in a hotel Elevator when the young woman escapes from the family of the gang’s latest victim. Later, Ateş becomes the legal guardian of his half-siblings, leading to a mix-up that makes Leyla their nanny. Following this, a series of other events bring the two closer together.

The premise itself is already intriguing, but the way the story is being developed makes the series even more captivating. In addition to comics, the events that follow the characters’ encounters and reunions manage to arouse the viewer’s curiosity about Ateş’ evolving relationship with his half-siblings and also with Leyla.

Even as the romantic relationship between them is getting more intense in recent episodes, there’s a certain tension regarding their complicated pasts and Leyla’s lies. Therefore, the audience anxiously awaits the next events and movements of the protagonists – and the antagonists.

Romance with pinches of comedy

During the Turkish summer, it’s common for broadcasters to bet on romantic comedies. Kanal D was no exception to the genre. While opening space to discuss universal subjects such as family and love, Ya Çok Seversen also serves up a romance seasoned with touches of comedy to the public.

The romantic relationship between Ateş and Leyla is a central part of the plot and is being worked on engagingly throughout the episodes. Slowly, these two characters are unlocking new emotions within themselves and for each other. The narrative development of the couple’s story is enthralling, leaving the audience eager for the upcoming chapters, in addition to making fans root for them more and more.

Furthermore, İlter’s (Şerif Erol) connection with the children, Aydos’ daring and playful nature, and Berit’s sweetness bring the light-hearted charm that a Turkish series needs to entertain its audience.

Family drama

Despite bringing romance and comedy, the Turkish series is primarily a family drama that portrays the different experiences of the characters: Ateş has broken ties with the family, Leyla is in search of her parents, and the Ilgaz siblings, Aydos and Berit, became orphans at a very young age. In the end, each of their storylines revolves around the same goal, which is the creation of stable and genuine bonds among the five of them.

Ya Çok Seversen goes beyond romance and worries about the characters’ development and overcoming their past traumas, showing the ups and downs that intersect this journey. Ultimately, it becomes clear that the plot revolves around a shared purpose: the establishment of stable and genuine connections among them

Well-developed characters

A well-developed character plays an essential role in the narrative’s overall development and fosters a sense of empathy between the characters and the audience. Ya Çok Seversen does it very well. The story presents multi-faceted main characters, each with background stories rich in realistic personal experiences. As the narrative unfolds, their motivations and attitudes come to the forefront with each new episode.

For example, Leyla has a solid motivation to join a gang comprised of hustlers who create fake weddings, while Ateş has good reasons to make some of his choices. Their reasons are far from frivolous, and they influence not only the characters’ personalities but also cause substantial shifts within the storyline.

The remaining characters earn increased space and attention in the story. The plot subtly shows how the siblings Ilgaz, Aydos and Berit, were affected by the death of their parents and the lack of care by their closest relatives. During this process, the trio faces more changes, like when Ateş returns home.

More than just revealing the characters’ individuality, Ya Çok Seversen also presents the complexity of their relationships. Now, the audience has been following the birth of a beautiful and sincere relationship between them. Step by step, the newly formed family of five begins to forge strong bonds, confronting their fears together and sharing fun and meaningful moments.
