Interview | Umut Kurt talks about the success of Zeytin Ağacı (Another Self) in Brazil and the new season

Giving an interview to Brazil for the first time, Umut Kurt talks about the success of the Netflix series, where he plays the comic character Erdem and a possible third season in Brazil

Umut Kurt was born in Erzincan, Türkiye. He is a well-known actor and author in his country since he began his career in 1998. He has over 30 projects in his curriculum and has starred in the films Organize İşler (2005), Beynelmilel (2006) and Kavşak (2010), as well as in dizis such as Payitaht: Abdülhamid (2017) and Çıplak (2020).

He currently stands out in the role of Erdem, in Zeytin Ağacı (Another Self, 2022), a Netflix drama series. The plot tells the story of three friends who, together, face Sevgi’s serious illness. They seek healing and peace through family constellation and energies, also involving their family and friends, in a moving story of overcoming.

In the plot, Umut Kurt’s character is married to Leyla (Seda Bakan). The couple is somewhat comical and disturbed: Erdem ends the first season in prison and leaves his wife, already pregnant with a child, and her friend’s illness to deal with. Despite this, the second season shows Erdem reconnecting with himself, in a funny and emotional reconciliation. The cast also includes actors Tuba Büyüküstün, Boncuk Yılmaz, Murat Boz, Fırat Tanış and Rıza Kocaoğlu.

In an interview for Entretetizei, Umut Kurt comments on his character: “Playing Erdem is very fun with a sad side. On the one hand, he does great injustices and victimizes those around him, but on the other hand, he suffers great injustices and becomes a victim. He didn’t actually create the person he became, he turned into this man to protect himself from that life.”

Also, Umut talks about what it is like to be an actor in Türkiye. For him, it is easier than being an actor in many countries, at least to start acting.Being on Netflix sets is one of the best points you can reach in this business”, tells him.

Check out our interview with Umut Kurt, where he talks about Another Self, a possible third season in Brazil and leaves a special message for Brazil:

Entretetizei: Hello Umut. I hope you are doing well. Your career is full of experiences. Before asking about projects, tell us why you chose acting and what inspires you the most.

Umut Kurt: I started theater courses at a very young age and after I got on stage I always wanted to do this job, it was a difficult journey. It is a path where you have to work hard, be good, talented and lucky. Today I am very happy that I chose this path. I am glad that I do this job, I think it is the best job in the world.

E: You have acted in many TV series and movies, which projects have affected you the most?

UK: All the works I play excite me very much and of course they all have their place. I put Zeytin Ağacı (Another Self) in a very special place because it helped us reach such a large audience. Again, taking part in films like Beynelmilel, İstemım Var, Kavşak, Hayat, being shown at festivals and receiving awards is a great source of pride. They are all successful works that I have collected beautiful memories of, they are all very important to me.

E: What are the biggest challenges of being an actor in Türkiye? What makes you happiest in this profession?

UK: Being an actor in Türkiye is easier than being an actor in many countries, at least to start acting. Being on Netflix sets is one of the best points you can reach in this business. I am lucky and work in a happy environment for myself, and I try to make the work of my colleagues easier as much as possible.

E: You are part of the cast of the successful Netflix series Zeytin Ağacı. What is it like to play Erdem and what are the days like on set? (The cast seems very friendly).

UK: Playing Erdem is very fun with a sad side. On the one hand, he does great injustices and victimizes those around him, but on the other hand, he suffers great injustices and becomes a victim. He didn’t actually create the person he became, he turned into this man to protect himself from that life. That’s why I watch him slip and fall and get back up again with a little sadness and a little laughter, while trying to get out of the hole he fell into with good intentions, without getting angry at him.

E: Erdem is a man who made many mistakes but corrected them and became a better father and husband. What did you learn the most from this character?

UK: When you get to know Erdem, you can already see that he is a good man. Time did this after his days away from his family and in prison. With the effect of family constellation, leaving behind the bad life that followed him in his past and the bad decisions he made and knowing how to start from scratch transformed him from a man who was avoided into an admirable husband and father.

E: We would like to see more of Erdem and Leyla’s story in the series, which deals with many themes such as spirituality, friendship, and the types of love. If it is approved, what can we expect from the next season?

UK: I don’t know what the next season will bring. But I think it wouldn’t be wrong to say that a funny, entertaining and passionate love awaits us.

E: Zeytin Ağacı is very famous in Brazil and Latin America. How does it feel to have a character that reaches so many countries?

UK: I think the fact that we grew up watching Brazilian TV series has a big impact on this. I think we speak the same language, we are a bit like the Latinos of this geography.

E: Do you know anything about Brazil? Would you like to visit us someday?

UK: You seem to be a very beautiful country, with warm-hearted big families, good music, good sports, good TV series, and definitely knows how to have fun. I want to see you as soon as possible, walk around the streets and eat delicious food.

E: Recommend us a movie or series you really like.

UK: I’m watching The Bear (2022) these days, but I’m also watching The Crown (2016), Succession (2018), The Office (2005) and Modern Family (2009).

E: You are an actor and also an author. What can we expect from you in the coming months?

UK: The programs we have recently made will continue to be screened on different platforms.

E: Finally, what would you like to say to Brazilian viewers? Leave us a message.

UK: We love you, thank you very much for watching us. We will get together to watch the third season as soon as possible. Who knows, maybe we will watch the third season in Brazil.

Exclusive interview | Rojbin Erden talks about Yabani, AsLaz’s success and leaves a message for her fans

In her first interview for Brazil, Rojbin Erden comments on Yabani’s success around the world and what she thinks about Brazil

Rojbin Erden is a rising Turkish actress. Raised in Istanbul, a cosmopolitan city and an international destination, the artist, who began her artistic career two years ago, is already a success among young Turkish and international audiences and has reached fans of all nationalities, with emphasis on Brazil.

In her career, Rojbin Erden has already been part of the cast of the Turkish telenovela Gelsin Hayat Bildiği Gibi (2022). Now, with great dedication and success, she’s part of the cast of Yabani. The dizi has a large concentration of Brazilian fans and tells the story of Ali (Halit Özgür Sarı), who was kidnapped as a boy and ended up working for the gang that kidnapped him.

After enduring years of hardship, Ali changes his name to Yaman and escapes his captors to build a new and better life together with his three friends. The cast also features Simay Barlas as the protagonist.

In Yabani, Rojbin is Asi, a proud and determined girl, standing out as a strong character. She doesn’t lower her head to anyone and is in love with Alaz Soysalan (Bertan Asllani), with whom she has intense back and forth — the couple AsLaz has won Brazilian hearts and is a success on social media.

Recently, fans congratulated the two actors – Rojbin and Bertan, with a video in Times Square, something that shocked and touched the entire fandom and cast. “It was the first moment when I clearly realized that AsLaz had now reached a very large audience. I felt very happy” says Rojbin.

In her first interview for Brazil, Rojbin Erden comments on Yabani’s success around the world: “It’s a proud feeling. It allowed me to meet very nice people from many countries of the world.” In addition, she also comments on her career and her relationship with social media and leaves a special message for her fans.

Read our exclusive interview below:

Entretetizei: Hello Rojbin, how are you? Thanks for your time. You have stood out with your acting talent and are very popular among the public. How did acting come into your life and what do you admire most about this profession?

Rojbin: I have been interested and curious in many areas of art since my childhood, but while I was living my life with music, my manager, whom I currently work with and whom I love very much, entered my life. We embarked on a beautiful path together and suddenly I found myself in this profession. In fact, everything happened very quickly for me, and as I continued, I began to love and connect more and more. I can say that it is a profession that is far from monotony, is open to creativity and can always be participated in.

E: How do you deal with fame? Is it something you enjoy or do you need quieter, more isolated moments away from the city? What do you like doing in your free time?

R: Because being well-known was very different from the lifestyle I was used to and because I had only been doing this job for two years, I could sometimes feel that I was having difficulty managing. But as I got used to this situation, I learned to balance it. I love socializing and city life, but of course, spending my holiday periods more isolated and in touch with nature is better for me and helps me remember myself.

E: Your beauty attracts a lot of attention and it’s incredible to be inspired by what you share on social media (we love your posts). Speaking of which, what is your relationship with social media? Do you usually follow what the fans (especially Brazilian ones) say?

R: First of all, thank you!

I started to use social media more actively with Yabani and yes, I try to follow it. It is very valuable that we can be in different countries in different languages and share our love with each other so sincerely.

E: Speaking of your career, what genre and character would you like to portray one day?

R: My priority is to show a different side of me than the characters I play, and the fact that the characters I have played and will play have different colors increases my motivation for my profession.

E: You are now in the Yabani! The series has gained fans all over the world. What is it like being on this project and receiving so much love?

R: It’s a proud feeling. It allowed me to meet very nice people from many countries of the world. I am happy to bring Asi to life and be a part of this project.

E: What was the most difficult Yabani scene to shoot? What’s your favorite one?

R: In the first episode, the scene where Asi Cesur Yaman and Umut had a running race lasted for hours. It was one of the hottest days of the summer and we couldn’t recover for a long time. I was getting more tired in the first chapters as I was getting used to the new job excitement, but now that I’m used to this pace, it’s more comfortable and relaxed. The scenes that I cannot forget and remember most clearly are our neighborhood home scenes in the first episode. I remember everything like it was yesterday.

E: We’ve talked about Brazilian fans before and we know they surprised you with AsLaz in Times Square. What was it like to see this surprise? Have you ever experienced anything like this before?

R: When I first saw it, I thought it wasn’t real 😀 I thought it was one of the edits, but when I started sharing it on many pages, I realized it. It was the first moment when I clearly realized that AsLaz had now reached a very large audience, I felt very happy.

Times Square video:

E: What can fans expect from AsLaz in the upcoming episodes? Will there be any surprises?

R: AsLaz is always full of surprises, anything can happen at any moment 🙂

E: Can we expect new projects after Yabani? Do you already have something in mind?

R: I want to continue my acting life, but I don’t have any information about the future yet.

Credits: Aziz Useinov/@‌grandcarreiletisim/Tʀᴜsᴛ TM®️

E: Talking about Brazil, do you know anything about our culture? Are you thinking of visiting us someday? (Since you like the city, you’ll love visiting São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro!)

R: Yes, I am wondering a lot and want to visit you soon so much. I am sure that I will love the entertainment life of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, but first I want to visit the cathedrals, museums and historical places and buildings, and I am especially wonder about Canela.

I know that football and sports are very important in your country, I am wearing the football shirt you sent me as a gift, the colors are very beautiful 🙂 currently the Brazil football shirts are very fashionable in Turkey, brands make their t-shirts and crop tops.

E: Finally, leave a message for your fans, especially Brazilians 🙂

R: Thank you for your kind wishes, support and the good feelings you made me feel from miles away.

(She also wrote in portuguese): Estou feliz por ter você (I’m happy to have you).

Kerem Bürsin: Meet the Turkish actor who supports social and environmental guidelines and is a success in the whole world

The Turkish actor Kerem Bürsin is a success on social media and his international fame has many reasons, among them the concern about social and environmental guidelines and the affection with the fans. Find out some reasons for this global success

The Turkish culture moment is his! Kerem Bürsin was born in Turkey, in 1987 and because of his father’s work, he has already gone to more than five different countries. It brought him a pretty strong cultural perception, which explains a lot about the human being he is.

I write this article in first person because it is a subject that I master and I am proud to speak with confidence that Kerem is a world-famous actor and is loved for being a man with a great heart, sensibility, and empathy, something we see less often nowadays. Writing about male figures is not an Entretê pattern, nor the writer who speaks to you, but today we are opening an exception.

Who is Kerem Bürsin, what’s his story, and what makes him so special?

Kerem and his best friend Hector | Disclosure: Instagram @thebursin

After spending some time in the United States, where he majored in Marketing — an area that provided him a huge notion of the market —, Kerem decided to listen to his heart and follow his intuition

Since he was young, he was already passionate about acting, so he decided to dive for once into this dream and faced his parents, who didn’t believe that much in his career. He had a moonlighting job as a security guard, driver, janitor… and paid himself for his drama classes. We can already see he is a hard-working man so far. But wait, there’s still so much to talk about.

+ Happy B-day Kerem Bürsin: recall the actor’s path

The fact of having been to so many countries and cultures made Kerem a non-standard Turkish man. I say this because Turkey is a sexist country, where men cherish for for their well-being and put themselves in first place, besides being a country with a totalitarian government that preserves man’s honor, leaving aside many important guidelines like women’s rights, freedom of speech and social and environment policies

Disclosure: Instagram @thebursin

There, it is very hard seeing men who defend female topics and it is due to the culture. Kerem could be one more Turkish man, like many around, but no: his path, upbringing, and experiences made him see the human being and the world beyond. He is the kind of man who seats to give a lecture and makes a point of talking about logging, violence against women and animals, and the importance of the vote — and maybe that’s why he bothers some people so much — and good thing, because it’s about that!

A little about Bürsin acting: from Andy Flynn to Serkan Bolat, the great landmark of his career

Kerem’s official debut in the acting world was in the movie Sharktopus (2010), in the role of Andy Flynn. After a few more experiences that guaranteed he was born for art, and after the end of Palace of Damned’s shooting in 2013, Kerem decided to return to Turkey, temporarily until then. Little did he know he would stay until these days, once his instincts were more than right.

+ Interview | Turkish actress Şebnem Hassanisoughi tells us all about her career

Still in 2013, he made his debut in the dizi Güneşi Beklerken and after that, there were many projects: the Unutursam Fısılda (2014) movie and the Şeref Meselesi (2014) drama, which got him a Rising Star of the Year at the GQ Award in 2014. In 2017 he was in Bu Şehir Arkandan Gelecek, as Ali Smith, the character who got him his first international recognition as Best Actor at the Seoul International Drama Awards.

But it was in 2020 that his world fame rightly arrived: Serkan Bolat was a character who touched people who have watched Sen Çal Kapımı. The dizi starring Kerem Bürsin and Hande Erçel arrived at an opportune time: the pandemic. People were at home and needed to find a refuge You Knock On My Door supplied feelings that were missing at that time, the biggest one was love.

+ Hande Erçel: read the Turkish Actress interview to Based Istanbul website

The dizi’s global success is due to the fact that Hande and Kerem surrendered themselves completely to two characters who had catchy life stories befitting reality. Serkan and Eda were two people who could easily be friends or acquaintances on our day-to-day and the differential for such success was, actually, the fact that both actors had found love in the set, bringing even more feelings to the public. Besides being in love in the series, they were also in real life, and it brought even more truth and authority to the dizi.

I could spend hours convincing you why Sen Çal Kapımı is a success. Just to have an idea, currently, the dizi is being reprised in Turkey, two years after its end, and continues with a record audience, surpassing the newest dizis. If I may say so, Kerem perhaps did not expect SO MUCH success and this global reach. It happened very naturally, because, on stage, everything was really true, as well as his interest in the causes, something very difficult to see among Turkish men and women. The most incredible thing is to see him using his fame for these causes, so they can reach everyone.

+ The secret behind Sen Çal Kapımı’s longevity

The thousand facets of Kerem Bürsin and the success of his new dizi

Handsome, talented, owner of his own production company — BraveBorn Films — responsible for an admirable curriculum, is passionate about the profession and the guidelines on the environment… This is the moment that I, as a feminist and owner of this portal that you are reading, step out of my comfort zone to reinforce my admiration for this man, because he really deserves it. Kerem is HeForShe’s ambassador to Turkey, a solidarity campaign that defends women’s rights initiated by UN Women in 2014. Knowing that Kerem exists to be a spokesman for other men to look at the agendas related to Turkish women, who need to be heard and defended, is exciting.

In addition to all this love for the Turkish and his intelligence with words, in a recent interview with L’Officiel Türkiye, Kerem comments on how social networks negatively impact the understanding of love today:

We are in a period where every second we feel insufficient. We are surrounded by messages like ‘You are not good enough, you are not beautiful, you are not in shape’ and we are constantly led to feel insufficient. In bilateral relationships, we often feel insufficient on the other side. But we are enough, we just need to remember to love unconditionally, maybe we need to learn again from the beginning“.

About his career currently, Kero (as he is affectionately called by fans), has been working on the summer dizi Ya Çok Seversen, by the producer Ay Yapim. He plays Ateş, a man who lived part of his life in boarding school after his mother’s death, preventing him from having contact with his family. After spending years alone abroad and trusting no one, he returns to Turkey after the recent death of his father. In the will, his father has put the custody of his three children with his second wife, Müge, in the hands of Ates, and now he must face a new life, with hits brothers around him.

+ Ya Çok Seversen: 5 reasons behind the international success of the Turkish series

During the development of the series, we see Ateş soften his heart and be enchanted by the children, mainly with the great help of Leyla (Hafsanur Sancaktutan) who is part of a false marriage gang. Ah, of course, we have a love story! Ateş may seem harsh, but his feelings for Leyla come to a head when she discovers that they are not so different, with somewhat harsh pasts.

Kerem’s character won the heart of fans, especially Latinos, who have a very special affection for the Turkish actor. On Twitter, dizi has been appearing in current affairs every week, especially on Thursdays, the day it is broadcast live. According to Somera — a technology company that provides insights for companies — Ya Çok Seversen was the third and most commented dizi program on social networks on August 17, with its 7th episode. This shows how dizi and the actor are popular and loved on social media.

+ Meet popular Turkish romantic comedies

And speaking of social networks…. We have no more doubts that Kerem Bürsin is an admirable and necessary man for the world and for our lives. The proof of this is what the fans say about him. To produce this agenda, I studied a little about Kerem’s life and asked the fans the following questions: “What do you love most about him? And in your opinion, why is he so successful outside Turkey?“.

I did not imagine that this tweet would take the proportion that it took and, in the end, became a center of love statements for our dear Turkish. How fortunate that the Turks have Kerem Bürsin! I wish that this enlightened human being with a kind and welcoming heart can inspire more and more people, especially other men, to be better people.

One of the points that most calls attention in Kerem Bürsin is the attention and affection with the fans. In this recent photo, Brazilian fans met the actor and Hafsanur Sancaktutan during recordings of Ya Çok Seversen | Photo: disclosure via Twitter

Here are some statements from fans who, like me, know the importance of Kerem for the world and its culture:

“It’s hard to say what I love most about him, there are so many things. But I believe that what stands out most is his human and humble form. And I believe that’s what makes him so successful outside, besides the talent he is” – AnaJu @anajubursin

“Kerem has a sweetness in how he treats people that impresses me. Children, co-workers, fans, friends, family. In addition, he makes a point of using the space he has in the media to publicize charitable projects and help causes that are not always popular in Turkey” – Juliana @JulianaDMacedo

The hug <3 [I love him] because he has the vibe of being a good person (and he is!!!!) #KeremBürsin” – @_Flavinhasilva

Photo: disclosure | Twitter @_Flavinhasilva

“There is something about him that makes him too special and I attribute the reciprocity and the fact that he makes himself very close to the fans. Although he does not expose his life, the time he devotes to fans approaching him is real and true. He looks like someone from our family” – @Borboleta100asa

This is such a hard question because there is nothing in him that a normal human being can’t love. He is so kind to all his fans, loves and supports women always, all his partners talk about how he is so nice to them, he supports issues that are important to people. He is perfect” – @thebursinb

Kerem is so Kerem, maybe his way of being, he is so attentive to the fans, knight, but above all, it is an open book, we can see when he is happy or sad. He’s a great example of a person. If you’re interested in different things, you see he’s very cultured.” Andra @andra05551819

Because he’s just him, you don’t pretend behind a character. He is mature, friendly, honest, hardworking, with a character of envy, besides he is one of the most beautiful guys I have ever seen in life and point. It is these “small” and incredible details that make him this GIANT!” – Tathy @TathyResende

So fast, I would say that stand out, three characteristics: Kero is always very respectful of Todes, is consistent with what he says, and is a humble person, despite his great success.” – Serena @itsme_serena

I love the energy he transmits even from afar. You feel close to him! His success is the result of simplicity, education, talent, generosity, and especially the feeling he gives of PEOPLE LIKE US. Bürsin, you deserve the world!” – Sandy @sandyriienda

There are so many things… he is a man of character, kind, educated, sensitive to social and moral issues, beautiful inside and out! He is successful for his talent, friendliness, and incredible energy! Lov u” – Livia @Ocostt

Kerem is a natural communicator. And communicating is not just about talking, but listening, connecting. He looks in the eye, listens. At the same time that we see him as someone special, playing characters we’ve come to love, he seems so real, so people like us…” – Jana @janaoleinik

Interview | Turkish actress Şebnem Hassanisoughi tells us all about her career

Şebnem Hassanisoughi recently joined the cast of Aktris, a Turkish series starring Pinar Deniz, and is set to star in the dizi Yabani

Born in Istanbul, actress Şebnem Hassanisoughi is a talent on the rise in Türkiye. Her story in acting started when she was very young, studying theater, when she finally decided that was the path for her future. In a very short time I knew that this was what I wanted to do, that I wanted to study theater”, she says. Now, we can all watch Şebnem on Turkish series that are adored by fans all over the world – especially in Brazil.

Şebnem has been on many projects, like the TV series Vatanım Sensin (2016), broadcasted on Kanal D, with the character of Eftelya. In an interview for Entretetizei, Şebnem Hassanisoughi speaks what she knows about Brazil: “I listen to Brazilian music almost every day. I love Bossa Nova, old Brazilian singers, I even know the lyrics to some of them by heart and sing along”. She also talks about her career, experiences and leaves a charming message for the international audience that follows and admires Turkish productions.

Check it out below:

– To start the interview, can you tell us about your career? When did you decide you wanted to be an actress and how were your first experiences?

In my childhood, I was in contact with different areas of art. I painted, I wrote. While reading, I came across theater texts and began to read them aloud to myself. When I was 14, I enrolled in a theater course. I was lucky to meet good people in the industry. In a very short time I knew that this was what I wanted to do, that I wanted to study theater. At the age of 17, I was accepted to the theater department of the conservatory. Theater came first, then cinema and TV series.

– Which of your characters marked you the most and why?

It’s really hard to say, but when I read the question I thought of Efthalia from the series Wounded Love and Sevda from the first film I acted in, What Remains. Efthalia was a lonely woman who spoke and sang with a Greek accent and lived at the turn of the century. The set, the costume and the conditions of the time make her very special. Sevda, on the other hand, is in a very different place, because it was the first time that I did an intensive individual work in which I discovered my own way of working.

–  What are the main differences between working for TV projects and working for streaming projects?

I think the main difference is the duration of the work and knowing the continuation or the end of the story. With digital projects you work in a shorter time frame, with more compact stories, with characters you know how they’ll start and end. TV projects are much longer, it’s like a long journey where the route can change a bit along the way.

– In Aktris, you shared the screen with the talented actors Pınar Deniz and Uraz Kaygılaroğlu, very popular in Brazil. How did you feel working with them? How were the days on set?

It was very pleasant and comfortable to work with all my friends in the Aktris team. Pınar and I worked together years ago, so it was nice to have a reunion with her. Uraz is someone I felt like I had known for a long time. I am happy for the time I shared with him.

– How was the preparation to play Günes and what lessons do you take away from this experience, being a series that deviates from Turkish screenplay standards and risks tackling more controversial themes?

Before we went on set, the small cast and our director got together and worked for a while. We rehearsed, we had long conversations, we spent time together. To answer your question, Güneş is already someone who is looking for the controversial areas in the story.

– Sicak Kafa is a drama series set in a dystopian world hit by an epidemic spread through speech/verbal communication. How was your preparation to play Canan? How was the experience of working on a production with such a different plot?

We shot Hot Skull during the pandemic, when we were nervous about being on set. It was an interesting experience. We lived with our masks, but when it came to shooting, the masks came off and the headphones came on. Because the virus in this story, written long before the pandemic, was transmitted by auditory means, through people who had contracted the disease. This strange coincidence helped us a lot, but it was also very challenging.

–  What can we expect from your character in Yabani? What can you tell us about the dizi?

I read the scripts very quickly, very curious about what happens next. It’s a story that surprises a lot and you want to guess what’s going to happen next. The line of my character is very similar. It’s a role I think I’ll have a lot of fun playing.

–  What kind of character would you like to play in the future?

I would love to meet a character I can’t even imagine at the moment. But most of all I would like to work with a good script and a good director, with teams in different parts of the world.

– Aktris, Sicak Kafa, and Andropoz are series in which you had a role and that were shown in different parts of the world, including Latin America. How do you feel when you see that there are people from other nationalities who are interested in Turkish productions and want to know more about Turkish culture?

I’ve never believed in borders. It’s very exciting that stories, feelings, ideas are common to all of us.

– In the last ten years, we have seen a huge growth in the popularity of Turkish TV series and movies around the world. Why do you think Turkish productions are becoming so popular? What do you think catches viewers’ attention the most?

Yes, there is a great and wonderful interest. I wonder why, to be honest, but it’s very pleasing.

–  Brazil is at the top of countries that most consume Turkish productions. What do you know about Brazil? Would you like to visit our country one day?

You might be surprised to know that I listen to Brazilian music almost every day. I love Bossa Nova, old Brazilian singers, I even know the lyrics to some of them by heart and sing along. Probably with a very bad accent, but okay. Elis Regina, Gal Costa, Gilberto Gil, Egberto Gismonti, Hermeto Pescoal… I love them. I have a very close friend from Brazil. We have been wanting to visit her grandmother’s city together for years. Maybe this year we can do it. I also really want to be in Rio for the carnival season.

– Where do you see yourself after five years?

My wish for all time is to be here and now. I hope to be happy.

– Finally, what can we expect for the future? And what message would you like to leave for the Brazilian public?

I know all my Brazilian friends have one thing in common: they are warm, cheerful and fresh. This is very familiar and close to me, I guess because I come from the Mediterranean. Thank you for your perseverance, your joy, your dancing, your music, for inspiring the world.

Exclusive interview | Ceylan Atınç, Fashion Director and Stylist at Vogue Turkey

Ceylan Atınç, who has dressed Hande Erçel, Tuba Büyüküstün and Serenay Sarıkaya, talks about her profession and various topics involving Turkish fashion

From Ottoman kaftans (the famous Moroccan tunics) to creations inspired in the modern global fashion, turkish fashion has, in its history, wall paintings dating back to 100 B.C that show Central Asian Turks wearing leather boots, mintan shirts (loosely cut, collarless shirt), short kaftans and riding breeches, wide at the top and narrow at the bottom. Over the years, due to emigration from Asia to Anatolia, the integration of cultures has brought about several changes in Turkish fashion and culture.

In 1923, when the Turkish Republic was established, there was a movement to promote a secular and more modern nation-state, also influencing the way of dressing. Laws started to be implemented, forbidding the use of traditional clothing and encouraging the use of western fashion. In 1960, the tailored clothes from the past were replaced by the ready-to-wear industry.

All this movement brings us to nowaday, where we can see a big influence, almost daily, of the western fashion, also present, of course, in Latin America. The fact is that Turkish fashion and culture have been drawing attention, especially of Brazilians and of course Entretetizei needed to bring this topic to our readers and followers. And who could better than a Turkish professional from the fashion world to tell us about it, right?

We talked to Ceylan Atınç, Fashion Director of Vogue Turkey and certified in Styling for Media at the London College of Fashion. She has been working as a fashion and styling editor since 2005 and has been a lecturer at the Istanbul Fashion Academy. But what does a Fashion Director do exactly? How is a fashion campaign created? And how is it to work with celebrities? You can check these questions and much more in our interview. Check more below:

Turkish fashion and the day-to-day routine of a Fashion Director and Stylist: how does the whole creative process of a campaign work?

Now that you got to know a little about the history of turkish fashion, let’s go to the good part: the interview. We started the chat asking Ceylan what was the most challenging campaign she’s ever worked on as a Fashion Director and she told us that, once in a while, they receive challenging projects, both for the magazine and for the campaign itself. “To me the most shocking are the advertising campaigns. One of the hardest photoshoots I remember was the photoshoot for the campaign at the Museum of Archeology of Istanbul on a very snowy and icy day. The model was constantly falling on the ice and, at the end of the shoot, the photographer fell and broke the camera”, she said.

Another topic that awakens people’s curiosity, is the process of the creation of fashion campaigns, that requires some good hours of work and much, much creativity involved. When she was questioned about how the process of creating a campaign from scratch works and what happens behind the scenes, she comments that one of the most fun parts is preparing the moodboard for the photoshoot. “It’s very exciting to pick the model and the place, style the outfit to fit her, decide the hair and the make up and, finally, create the hero of the story. But this hero doesn’t always end up the way you dreamed of. Things that happen in your surroundings and that cannot always be foreseen can affect the shoot: for example, the menstruation of the model on the shooting day, a fight with their lover or a disease. Because our business is always with people, therefore the mood changes affect us a lot”, she adds.

Fashion and Celebrities: how is working with big turkish actresses, like Hande Erçel?

It’s a fact that a fashion director has the possibility to work with many professionals, among them, artists and celebrities. In Ceylan Atınç’s case, some turkish actresses have already stamped her portfolio, like Hande Erçel, Tuba Büyüküstün and Serenay Sarıkaya. In Hande’s case, one of the most famous turkish actresses in Brazil and Latin America, Ceylan had the opportunity to direct and work with the actress in two campaigns for Vogue Turkey: in 2021 and 2022, besides a special work for the Elle Style Awards, also in 2022, where Ceylan dressed Handemiyy with an iconic Gucci dress – the famous purple dress.

Working with Hande is very pleasant and easy. She is respectful, well-intentioned, pleasant and sincere. The most important criteria for me are respect and good-will. Besides, everything she wears fits her very well and she can understand the persona I want to create in the shoot and pose accordingly. Sometimes the actresses don’t like to be photographed and it’s very hard for us. Hande loves fashion. She enjoys every moment of a photoshoot”, she says.

Oh, of course we couldn’t leave out the question if we can expect another work with Hande in the future and Ceylan replied to us with a yes, sure. Why not?!”. For those who still don’t know her, Hande Erçel became globally famous for her role of Eda Yildiz, in the series Sen Çal Kapımı, of Fox TV, broadcasted in Brazil by HBO Max. She is the most followed actress of her country and constantly draws attention with her looks and impeccable style.

Still on the topic of fashion production, Ceylan comments about her criteria and references to pick the ideal outfit for each event and photoshoot: in the first place, time is very important to me, because when I can think and work on this, I can do a much better job. In difficult times, everyone can panic and this complicates our work. Besides that, it’s important to me to get to know correctly the content of the event the celebrity will attend. I prepare a lot of famous celebrities, both women and men. It’s an important criteria to me that the person that I work with likes and is open to innovations”, comments the director.

How to conciliate various projects and how powerful is Brazilian fashion & culture around the world?

Besides working at Vogue, Ceylan Atınç has her own style agency and creative consultancy. With her team, they offer seasonal or monthly consultancy and do the styling of campaigns/advertisement and textile companies. To add up, she has been teaching Styling classes for ten years now. “I love to be in all facets of fashion”, comments the stylist and creative director.

And since we’re brazilians and in love with fashion and turkish culture, we had to include Brazil in this conversation. By the way, did you know that Brazil is one of the countries that most consume the famous dizis (turkish series)? And what would be the “secret” of this match between such different cultures? That’s what we asked Ceylan. She says that, after university, she continued her studies in Berkeley, USA and, while she studied there, her closest friends were from Chile.

+Turkish fashion: 5 actresses to be inspired by

As we spent more time together, I felt that the cultures of these two countries [Turkey and Chile] were also very alike, although they couldn’t be farther from each other. I think that the latin american countries are very attached to their families, friends and traditions, like my country. We’re also countries with a large and young population. This can cause a bit of chaotic situations. We’re also similar in this base”, she said.

The truth is that Brazil and Turkey have much more in common than we imagined. In our conversation with Ceylan, we found out that, for example, the latin telenovelas were also broadcasted in Turkey, proving that this bond comes from a long time. “When I was a child, we used to watch brazilian TV series in Turkey. The term ‘novela’ entered our vocabulary at that time. Young & Restless, Marimar, Ugly Betty and many more..”, she completed.

She also adds compliments to the brazilian women: “Do I have to mention your beautiful women? The brazilian models are so epic in the fashion industry. But to me, the most interesting part of the brazilian culture is the tradition of festivals. I love all the costumes, colors, music and dances. I hope to visit it one day and see it with my very own eyes”, said Ceylan.

Turkish fashion and the Dizis: what can Ceylan Atınç tell us?

In this matter we have understood the importance of the turkish fashion for its people. Every detail tells a story, just like in the dizis, that are earning their space around the world. The turkish actors, in general, are very dear to brazilians and working in the styling of these characters is certainly a job that requires a lot of care and creativity. Thinking in the future, we asked our guest if she intends to work with styling in dizis and how it would be, for her, the ideal character. She replies talking about the difficulty of working with a styling in a production that shoots for a long period of time:

To be honest, I tried twice: I dressed Asli Enver for Istanbullu Gelin and did the styling for another turkish series for one season. But the problem is that the episodes are so long, they run like a movie in one week, so I think that the most difficult part of the styling of a series is trying to find time and adapt the script based on the costume. I will only do styling if this challenge of time disappears. 🙂 so maybe a project for Netflix or Disney+ would be better”, she adds.

Turkish dizis have a different recording and display format than the rest of the world. Some platforms are already investing in global formats, with smaller episodes, like #DünyaylaBenimAramda, from Disney Turkey | Photo: publicity | dizilah

In Turkey, the dizis are separated by seasons: the winter season and the summer season. The turks are in love with dramas that are broadcasted during the turkish winter, since it’s the period they spend the most time inside their houses. Which means that the audience consequently increases. There, they take in consideration the audience by economic classes: devices are installed in the houses and that is the way they can see the classifications [ratings], that are divided in three: total, AB1 and AB. The ones that get the higher audience and who’s always rising in the AB classification stay airing, that’s why some dizis stay on air for many years. Summing up: if there’s an audience, they will keep renewing and shooting many seasons, no matter what the script looks like.

+Five series that paved the way for Turkey to dominate the world

This explains what Ceylan said about the styling taking “a long period of time”, since the dizis are broadcasted just once every week (different from Brazil, that broadcasts their novelas every day), the medium duration of every episode is from 2h to 2h30 per episode – and they don’t film in studios: the filming always happen in real places.

The turkish culture, feminism and conservatism

Besides dizis, another subject that has been drawing attention – and that we learned through turkish series, is the turkish conservatism. Despite being a country filled with talent and with highly inspiring professionals, the population, especially women, still suffer with sexism and the classic conservatism, but that doesn’t mean that this “minority” is silenced: on the contrary, actually.

Turkish Artists have been using Social Media to talk about Violence and Abuse Against Women | photo: @afrasaracoglu

Thanks to this, we see a very symbolic and important movement from artists and from the turkish media itself in favor of the freedom of speech. At the same time, feminism is still a matter that, compared to Brazil and other western countries, is a taboo. As a website made by women and that supports the work of other women, we questioned Ceylan as to how she deals with feminism in her day-to-day routine and job.

She told us that she loves working with women, even when sometimes they’re more complicated [to work with]. “I believe that they’re more creative. Women are creators of solutions. I always try to support the Women’s Rights and organizations/initiatives of women”.

Recently, a post in her Instagram caught our eye and encouraged us to chat about these issues with the fashion director: it refers to the assault on iranian women that protest daily, against the current regime, authoritarian and conservative. In the post, Ceylan comments: “I had a lot of iranian students in the styling classes we opened online during the pandemic. I admire the talent, vision and eye for fashion in each one of them. Today, in our last class, I had a student that left me very emotional: he imagined that he had finally achieved the freedom they fought for and published the Vogue Iran. He dedicated his first cover shoot to the young iranian women that died while fighting for freedom. Not only imagined, he also took a photo with his young iranian friend that cut his hair short. I wish “freedom” for all of my fellow citizens under pressure”. Take a look:

Ceylan Atınç and her plans for the future

In fact, the turkish fashion is increasingly on the rise. It follows historical periods that marks important events for the culture and turkish people; and nowadays, it gets inspiration from trends, brands and styles that are also present in the western fashion – and latin.

Our interview with Ceylan Atınç ends with Entretê asking if she has interest in expanding her work for other countries, including Latin America. The stylist and director tells us that, in Vogue, diverse photoshoots are made outside the country, mostly in Europe. Our next cover for December was filmed in Los Angeles. I would love to be able to visit Latin America and do some shoots there. Personally, I’m very curious about this part of the world where I’ve never been”, she said – and we would love to see her here, making beautiful and empowering photoshoots.

Ceylan knows that us and our audience are in love with the entertainment world and, of course, the fashion world – including the turkish culture. Her final message to our readers was: “Thank you for this interview. Come and visit Turkey: Istanbul, Capadoccia, Bodrum, Göcek, Mardin… you will find a beautiful environment here!”, she finishes.
