On My Block é um sucesso que você também precisa conhecer. Ambientada em um bairro marginalizado dos Estados Unidos, a série retrata assuntos relevantes para a nossa sociedade, como violência envolvendo gangues, deportação, valores, a cultura negra e latina e jovens que estão entrando no ensino médio, tendo que lidar com o papel social e a realidade de cada um. É sobre amor, amizade e família.
Além de ser formada por um elenco negro e latino, a série também mostra um pouco sobre o dia a dia dos latinos nos Estados Unidos. Isso nos leva a refletir sobre a realidade de cada um, oportunidades, suas essências, valores e estilos de vida.

Com uma narrativa leve, mas sem deixar de mostrar os vocabulários e modos de pessoas ligadas às gangues e à periferia americana, ?On My Block? conquistou o público e está indo para sua segunda temporada, que estreia hoje (sexta) e, para deixar vocês ainda mais animados, entrevistamos um dos protagonistas, o ator Diego Tinoco, que interpreta o personagem Cesar – membro mais novo de sua família. Família essa que chefia a gangue de seu bairro.
O menino está constantemente tentando fugir da vida varginalizada, com a ajuda de seus amigos. No meio do caminho, ele se apaixona por sua melhor amiga, Monse (Sierra Capri). Seu primeiro papel foi uma participação na série Teen Wolf e, na entrevista, ele contou sobre seu personagem, suas inspirações, construção de personagens e, claro, deixou um recadinho especial para os fãs brasileiros. On My Block is a big success around the world and everyone should watch it. Why? Well, first, because the story is SO what is happening in our society nowadays: danger involving gangs, deportation, values, black and Latino culture. These are some of the topics you will find while watching it – and trust me, we must face reality, because there is no perfect country. It’s about love, friendship and family.
Besides, the cast is almost 100% black and Latino – which is amazing – it?s a reflection of reality: opportunities, privileges and values, according to each one’s lifestyle and personality. It?s so interesting because we watch a mix of Latino culture, its behavior and vocabulary IN America.
I?m sure On My Block will be included in your NETFLIX list and, to learn more about the series, we had the pleasure of interviewing Diego Tinoco, one of the protagonists. He plays Cesar Diaz, a boy who is constantly trying to get out of his family?s gang, with the help of his friends and falls in love with his best friend, Monse (Sierra Capri).
Diego?s first appearance on an American TV Show was in Teen Wolf (series). In the interview, he talks about her career, inspirations, the process of constructing a character and more. Check out our chat below:
Anna: How was the construction of your character for ?On My Block? and how did you feel doin? it?
D: Oddly enough. it was like my life was imitating the show. Not in the exact circumstances, but definitely along the same emotional ball parks. For example, when I had booked the role of Cesar on On My Block, I was going through so much. My best friend had just moved back home, leaving me to live alone in Los Angeles and my girlfriend was pretty much breaking up with me. I was 19 all alone in Hollywood, on the verge of giving up my dream and just moving back home. I felt hopeless. Then I started working on the show and all of that bled into the work I put on screen season 1. So I definitely took a lot from my real life and put it into the character. Also gave Cesar the innocence of a 14 year old and the need for love. He doesn’t have a mother or father, so love is rare for him. So his love for his friends and, especially monse, is extremely deep. This is like his drug.
Anna: Como foi a construção do seu personagem para a série e como você se sentiu durante o processo?
Diego: Foi curioso demais. Foi como se a minha vida estivesse imitando a série. Não nas circunstâncias exatas, com as mesmas intensidades emocionais. Quando eu fui escalado para o papel de Cesar, meu melhor amigo voltou para casa, me deixando sozinho em Los Angeles e minha namorada estava praticamente terminando comigo. Eu tinha 19 anos sozinho em Hollywood, prestes a desistir do meu sonho e voltar para casa. Eu me senti sem esperança. Depois, eu comecei a filmar a série e tudo isso resultou no trabalho duro que eu dei na primeira temporada. Então eu realmente trouxe muita coisa da minha vida real e coloquei no personagem. Também dei a Cesar a inocência de um adolescente de 14 anos e a necessidade de receber amor. Ele não tem mãe ou pai, então,amor é algo raro para Cesar. Seu amor por seus amigos e, especialmente, Monse, é extremamente profundo. É como se fosse seu vício.

A: How would you describe Cesar to those who will start watching the series?
D: Cesar is in all of us. He’s a loving kid, who loves love, and is dealt some pretty heavy cards in life. He’s the perfect example of how society will try to judge you from where you are coming from, and who you are supposed to be, but he will not let it define him. He has hopes and aspirations to a grand life and,thankfully,he has his 3 best friends to try and help him attatain just that. Along the journey, he faces not only the battle of trying to get out of a gang, but also trying to get through being a teenager.
A: Como você descreveria Cesar a todos os que vão começar a assistir à série?
D: Cesar está em todos nós. Ele é um garoto amoroso, que ama o amor e recebe algumas “cartas” bem pesadas na vida. Ele é o exemplo perfeito de como a sociedade vai tentar te julgar através de onde você vem e quem você supostamente é, mas ele não vai deixar isso defini-lo. Ele tem fé e aspirações para uma grande vida e felizmente ele tem seus 3 melhores amigos para tentar ajudá-lo a atingir exatamente isso.

A: What inspired you to be an actor?
D: Hm, so many things. I guess when I was 9, I came across a television series called Victorious and was fascinated with the show and wanted to meet the main actress of it. So, when I was 9 that was my dream. I also just always loved movies as a little kid and the art of story telling, a place where anything and everything is possible. Life inspires me to be a better an actor and also watching any movie with DiCaprio. DiCaprio is one of my biggest inspirations.
A: O que te inspira a ser ator?
D: Hm, tantas coisas. Eu acho que, quando eu tinha 9 anos, me deparei com uma série chamada Victorious, fiquei fascinado e queria encontrar a atriz principal dele. Então, naquela época, era o meu sonho. Eu também sempre amei filmes desde criança e a arte de contar histórias, um lugar onde tudo é possível. A vida me inspira a ser ator e também assistir à qualquer filme com Leonardo DiCaprio. Ele é uma das minhas maiores inspirações.

A: What lessons can the audience bring from the series to their lives?
D: The audience can take so much from this show. For example: where you come from, does not define where you are going to end up. Just because you?re in rough cirmcustances, does not mean you must stay in them forever. This is your destiny own it. This show will teach you of friendship, love, loss, tragedy, goodtimes and bad. The whole spectrum of life. Especially for teens. I think that’s why they relate so well to the show.
A: Quais lições o público pode tirar da série para suas vidas?
D: O público pode tirar tantas coisas dessa série…. por exemplo, o lugar de onde você vem, não define onde você vai terminar. Só porque você está em uma má situação não significa que você vai ficar nela para sempre. Esse é seu destino. Esse show vai te ensinar sobre amizade, amor, perda, tragédia, bons e más momentos. Todo o espectro da vida, especialmente para adolescentes. Eu acho que é por isso que eles se relacionam tão bem com o show.

A: What?s the importance of being in a show that portrays Latinos and Black people? And how do you feel, since you?re from a Latino Family?
D: It?s important for me to be on a show that portrays people of color, because everyone in the world should feel represented, especially the youth. They are our future. With this show, I think it’s important to not just show the stereo type of Cesar being in a gang and wanting to be in it as so many movies and shows have done before, but rather that here is a kid who is incredibly smart, kind, and loving who wants to go to college and live a better life.
We, the people, especially of the states, look up to the media so much, especially in TV and movies. If the only thing Latino kids see is another Latino actor playing a killer, over and over and over again, that’s what they will believe is true of the image of somewhat of themselves. And that is not true. Society will try to tell you who you are & I am here to say you are the only one who can tell you, who you are. Change in the entertainment industry is happening, and I am honored to be able to represent my blood in the industry for as long as I am given the privilege to do so.
A: Qual a importância de estar em um show que retrata os Latinos e Negros? E como você se sente, já que vem de uma família latina?
D: É importante para mim estar em um show que retrate essas pessoas, porque todos, em todo o mundo, deveriam se sentir representados, especialmente a juventude. Eles são o nosso futuro. Com esse show, eu acho importante não somente mostrar o estereótipo do Cesar estando numa gangue e querendo estar nela, como muitos filmes e shows fizeram antes, mas também que aqui está um garoto que é incrivelmente inteligente e gentil, amando quem quer ir para a faculdade e querendo viver uma vida melhor.
Nós, as pessoas, especificamente dos estados, nos baseamos no que vemos na mídia, especialmente em TV e filmes. Se a única coisa que as crianças latinas veem é outro ator latino interpretando um assassino, repetidamente, é nisso que eles vão acreditar que é a verdade em relação à imagem deles mesmos. E isso não é verdade. A sociedade vai tentar te dizer quem você é e eu estou aqui para dizer que VOCÊ é o único que pode lhe dizer quem você é. A mudança no entretenimento está acontecendo e eu me sinto honrado por poder representar o meu sangue na indústria por quanto tempo eu tiver o privilégio de fazê-lo.

A: What can we expect from On My Block season 2, especially from Cesar?
D: This season it?s literally a emotional roller coaster with Cesar. He is all over the places as soon as he is happy. His world turns upside down. It?s like life just keeps throwing the hardest obstalces at him. Expect a bromance between Jamal and Cesar, rough times between Oscar and Cesar, teen romance, lots of money, guns, fights, babies drama and comedy.
A: O que podemos esperar de On My Block na segunda temporada, especialmente de Cesar?
D: Essa temporada é literalmente uma montanha–russa emocional com Cesar. Ele está em todos os lugares, portanto, está feliz que seu mundo vira de cabeça para baixo. É como se a vida continuasse jogando os obstáculos mais difíceis para ele. Espere um bromance entre Jamal e Cesar, tempos difíceis entre Oscar e Cesar, romance adolescente, muito dinheiro, armas, lutas, babies drama e comédia.
